Horror story

I perfectly remember that cold winter night. It was January 13th, 1860, the same day that Paul and I had just got married. We were deeply in love with each other and had decided to spend our honeymoon somewhere remote from the city and the people we knew. We were invited to the luxurious mansion that his uncle, Lord James, had in the country, and we accepted as we did not have any other better choice.
After leaving the train station, we had to walk for a long time among the woods that led directly to the house. I will never forget the thick mist of that scary silent night, when we were able to perceive the most insignificant sounds of Nature. As I was very frightened, I asked my dear Paul to put his arm around me. Suddenly, we saw a dim light far in the distance that seemed to come from the mansion we were looking for. We sighed and smiled at each other because we felt relieved. However, it was a short-lived feeling since as we were approaching the dwelling, we found a cemetery just in front of the house. Paul tried to comfort me but I did not like the idea of sharing the place for our honeymoon with the dead ancestors of my husband. As we were passing by all those graves, it started to rain heavily and I could see how a rusty cross was beginning to lean forward and backward as though somebody were pushing it from below. That sight made my hair stand on end but Paul tried to convince me that it was only the blowing wind.
We arrived at the house at last and Lord James welcomed us with open arms. He was standing at the hall with Joan, his new wife, and Veronica, his stepdaughter. They were really kind to us but there was something in the way Veronica looked at Paul that made me feel terrified. She was a short blond girl whose eyes seemed to be hiding something. I greeted Verônica, she seemed to be our age. Veronica took us to the suíte. We passed through a long rustic corridor, and stopped in front of a door at the end of the hall. She unlocked the door, gave us the key and went away. I entered into the suíte followed by my husband, turned on the light and the fan,( it made a loud noise, so I decided to turn it off ).
The bedroom had an antique look, there was a double bed, a desk, a mirror an a large closet. Paul threw the suitcase on the bed and went straight to the bathroom, I sat down and decided to pack my clothes.
I opened the closet and came across a long red dress that seemed to be very old, it was on a hanger in the center of the closet. I took the dress and put myself in front of the mirror. It seemed to be made especially for me, it was beautiful and I decided to try on.
I put the dress and I felt as a goddess, it was perfect on me. I was looking at the mirror, when someone knocked at the door, I got scared because there was nobody in the house. I opened the door and nobody was there, I closed it again. I was very scared and I realized I was shaking. My husband already left the bathroom with a new outfit. He asked who had come and why I was wearing that dress. I told him that I didin't know who knocked at the door and i had found that dress in the closet.
Someone knocked at the door again, a shiver went through my body, they I asked paul to check who was knocking. He gave me a kiss on the forehead and opened the door. Nobody was there again. Paul closed the door and asked me to calm down, he said should be these street kids who play the doorbell and run off, he hugged me and we fall on the bed smiling.
But the light began to turn on and off repeatedly, I began to scream, and ran toward the door, but she seemed to be locked. When Paul opened the door I took a flashlight that was on the desk and we went out from the suíte. And we run in the dark corridor until we find a way out, when I thought I saw two chimpanzees.
I wondered what the chimps were doing at home when One of them ran toward me. Paul was right behind me and I screamed to Paul to run to the opposite side. Paul ran toward the kitchen and yelled me to follow him. When we entered into the kitchen he asked me to lock the door while he was looking for something to hurt do that chimpanzees.
My husband found a drawer of silverwares, and when that monster knocked at the door, Paul threw everything he had in his hands on the chimpanzee, but nothing worked, he kept coming toward us, while behind him to live mistress Veronica showed up.
She told the chimpanzee to leave her way, then she went into the kitchen with a knife in her hand, saying I was beautiful in that dress, (with a strange look that seemed to go deep inside me, a look that seemed to mix hate and cynicism) She continued talking, saying that Paul and I were a perfect couple. She also said there were a lot of people that could envy us. But she spoke staring at me as if she ignored my husband standing beside me. Envy, a weird and bad feeling don't you thik Victória? She told me. Envy is an easy feeling to deal, the most difficult or rather impossible, is the pain of unrequited love.
She looked at Paul. I think he didin't tell you, Victória, she said. your husband and I lived a great love story, but he left me to stay with you. She spoke as if she spit the words. But I give up to live a life without purpose. I wanted to do it in front of you, Paul, so you can see that this is all your fault! Once finished speaking, Veronica took the knife that was in her hands and hit on her chest falling dead on the ground. As soon as I fainted was when I woke up in hospital, Paul told me that the neighbor had called the police. We left home without commenting on this subject.
